How to make your own natural carpet freshener

How to make your home smell amazing with this easy home made essential oil carpet freshener.

So, this DIY lady has found a super simple way to naturally deodorise and freshen my carpets. With winter approaching, I find its a time of year where things start to smell a bit damp, a bit closed in and a little bit heavy, even if they aren't. The early frosts and autumn nights mean that we are closing up our homes earlier and opening them later in the mornings, with less fresh air flowing through them during the day.

Whilst I'm not a daily vacuum person, working from home and having 2 dogs, 2 cats and 2 kids means I do try to at least 3 times a week...ahhemmm!

So, this easy process is perfect for my 'busyness' not to mention my home smells amazing afterwards. Just like I'd cleaned for hours. ...... muwhahaha.. <top tip: great for last minute guests popping in>

Here's what you will need:

Recycled glass jar with a lid (if you are already a candle customer of ours, our Mason Jars are an excellent option once your candle has finished, if not use any ex-pantry jars)
Baking Soda
Your favourite essential oil blend
Glass bowl and spoon for mixing

How to make your own carpet deodoriser:

In a glass bowl, mix 2 cups of baking soda with around 20-25 drops of your chosen essential oil blend. Mix well, breaking up any clumps. Spoon the mixture into a glass jar and leave to sit for an hour without the lid on. This is to lightly dry out the mixture before sealing the container.

If you wish, you can punch holes in the lid of your jar for a shake effect. I prefer to keep mine sealed and pour a small amount into my hand, which I sprinkle over the carpet.

Leave the mixture on the carpet for around 15 minutes, whilst you dust (?) then you're ready to vacuum as usual.

Some of my insider tips below:

Use sparingly, a little goes a long way.
You don't need to use it every time you clean
If you are unsure about using it on your carpet, spot test first.
I have a bagless vacuum, so if you are unsure on how baking soda will react in yours, I suggest checking with your manufacturer first.
